NEXUS TEEN ACADEMY MISSION

Navigating Adolescent Struggles in Scottsdale, Arizona

The affluent community of Scottsdale, Arizona, is not immune to the devastating effects of teen drug abuse. According to the 2018 Arizona Youth Survey, 48% of Scottsdale 12th graders reported using alcohol in the past 30 days, compared to the state average of 44%. The most commonly abused substances among Scottsdale teens are alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. These alarming statistics underscore the importance of specialized, effective teen drug rehab in Scottsdale.

Teen drug abuse in Scottsdale is a growing concern, with trends showing an increase in prescription drug abuse among local youth. The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reported 18 overdose deaths among Scottsdale residents under the age of 21 in 2019, a 20% increase from the previous year. The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) also saw a 10% increase in drug-related disciplinary incidents during the 2019-2020 school year.

At Nexus Teen Academy, we offer a full continuum of care for Scottsdale teens struggling with drug abuse. Our evidence-based treatment modalities include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI). These proven approaches help teens identify and change negative thought patterns, develop healthy coping skills, and build intrinsic motivation for recovery.

Trapped in Silence: Why Scottsdale Teens Need Help, Now

Effective teen drug rehab must address the unique developmental and psychological needs of adolescents. At Nexus Teen Academy, we understand that teens require a different approach than adults when it comes to substance abuse treatment. Our comprehensive, evidence-based programs are designed to address the underlying emotional, social, and familial issues that contribute to teen drug abuse. Family involvement is a crucial component of successful teen drug rehab. Our family-centered approach includes therapy sessions, educational workshops, and ongoing support to help rebuild and strengthen family relationships strained by addiction. We also recognize the importance of addressing co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and trauma, which often fuel substance abuse in teens.

After completing our drug rehab program, teens and their families continue to receive ongoing support through our comprehensive aftercare services. This includes regular check-ins, alumni events, and referrals to local support groups and resources.

PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can affect teens who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events. It can lead to flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety.

Trauma

Traumatic events in teens can cause overwhelming anxiety or distress and include experiencing, witnessing, or being confronted with physical, verbal, and emotional abuse or another event that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury to oneself or someone else. When fight, flight, or freeze are triggered, the body responds to the perceived threat by sending more blood and oxygen in vital organs, which can result in increased heart rate, nausea, clammy hands, blurred vision, and/or feeling spacey to name a few trauma reactions.

Recreational Centers, Clubs, Youth Development, Reading Programs, and Community Centers In Scottsdale, Arizona

McDowell Sonoran Preserve scottsdale arizona

Like Scottsdale’s high schools prioritize student well-being through counseling, the city is filled with a wealth of community, recreational clubs, community leagues, youth development, and volunteer programs designed to empower teens in amazing ways.

But why these centers? Stigma and fear of society’s judgment among teens often create a barrier to seeking help. These centers offer a friendly, non-medical setting that feels more welcoming and less intimidating than traditional therapy settings.

These centers and programs foster social interaction and support, which is crucial for teens’ mental health. Being part of a community or program can help teens feel less isolated (which peaks in adolescents’ years, says a study by NIH), understand that others share their struggles, and foster a sense of belonging.

Imagine this:

  •  Your teen is dealing with Juvenile Primary Fibromyalgia (JFM). Getting involved in activities at the City of Scottsdale – Aquatics program can help teens lessen their anxiety.
  • Or maybe they’re over at Mountain View Park, where they can nurture their mood, feel more positive, and even lower their cortisol levels.
  • Let’s say they’re exploring Horizon Park and McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
  • They might also participate in multi-sports programs or volunteer opportunities, where they acquire life skills and essential tools like resilience, teamwork, sportsmanship, and preparation for future endeavors.

Note: These centers and programs are part of the City Of Scottsdale.
