About Nexus Teen Academy

How Nexus Teen Academy supports Sun City West families.

Nexus Teen Academy is a Joint Commission-accredited residential program for teenage girls whose swings have outgrown what one household can manage. The girls-only house occupies a desert parcel out in Cave Creek; from Sun City West the car ride takes 45 to 55 minutes. It serves ages 12 to 17. What looks like moodiness may turn out to be PMDD, depression, anxiety, trauma, short sleep or a bipolar-spectrum condition. We identify the cause first, then bring every caregiving adult onto the same page.

Treatment opens on a thorough psychiatric evaluation. Staff then record her moods, stamina and sleep every day, so each adult in her life works from identical evidence. The program is AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited and LegitScript certified.

The program

What our residential mood swings program includes.

All the elements below live inside one shared plan. Grandparents, a parent who lives elsewhere and the clinical team read from the same document, and it is updated each week from what staff observe, so nobody is working from an outdated version.

Evaluation before treatment

Sleep loss, ADHD, anxiety, trauma and any substance use get screened alongside depression, PMDD, DMDD and the bipolar spectrum, with records from every earlier provider reviewed.

One chart everyone can trust

Daily entries on mood, energy, sleep and, if she consents, her cycle replace the conflicting memories different households bring.

Weekday sessions with one therapist

Weekday sessions with her own licensed therapist apply CBT to triggers and the earliest signals, and bring in EMDR if trauma turns out to fuel the swings.

Skills for heated moments

Grounding and breathing exercises plus daily distress-tolerance drills, with the same wording taught to relatives so responses match from one home to the next.

Family therapy across households

Weekly sessions that mix in-person and video seats, and a parents' group on Saturdays where each adult rehearses the same calm response to a turn.

Psychiatric care, clearly shared

Medication recommended by the prescriber on site is tied to the diagnosis, adjusted to the response staff see, and changed only with consent from her legal decision-maker.

Classes that earn credit

A certified teacher delivers credit-bearing lessons every weekday at a pace her mood allows, with records passed back to Dysart or her home district.

A rhythm that travels home

Wake-up, meals, classes and lights-out keep set times all week, and that schedule is written into the home plan so each household follows it.

More we treat

What can sit behind severe mood swings.

In 2023, 53% of high school girls told CDC surveyors that their sadness or hopelessness simply would not lift. In girls that often surfaces as irritability or sudden tears, and relatives who see her at different times may each describe a different girl.

One team in Cave Creek examines every possible driver, whether that means a depressive or bipolar-spectrum course, anxiety, past trauma, ADHD or the use of substances, then treats what it confirms in a single plan, so the adults at home respond to the same diagnosis.

The setting

The Cave Creek residence for mood swings treatment.

She lives in a working, family-style home on Cave Creek desert ground, thirty minutes or thereabouts above central Phoenix. The household is girls only. Waking, meals and bedtime run on a timetable that never drifts, evenings are unhurried, someone on staff stays awake till morning, and Arizona fully licenses the home.

How healing happens

Evidence-based therapies for teen mood swings.

CBT drives the core work: identifying triggers, catching early warning signs and loosening the beliefs that keep a low going. EMDR is added when trauma underlies the swings and she is stable. Daily observation by staff fills in what weekly visits miss.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.

Getting started

How admission works, from first call to first day.

Teen in a one-on-one therapy session with a Nexus Teen Academy clinician
Our promise while you decide

1

One calm call

A licensed counselor asks how quickly and for how long her moods shift, whether her cycle seems involved, past diagnoses and medicines, and her present safety. We also note who holds decision-making authority and which relatives should be kept informed.

2

Coverage check

With permission we phone whichever insurer covers her, often a parent's plan, and report what it covers for residential behavioral-health care, our status in its network and an honest out-of-pocket estimate, usually the same day.

3

Clinical assessment

A clinician studies the course of her moods across months, the diagnoses and prescriptions she has had, family patterns and current safety, then proposes a level of care. Notes from each household on mood, sleep and cycle dates help complete the picture.

4

Plan the arrival

One coordinator gathers school files and prescriptions from whichever home holds them, plans the drive from Sun City West, mails out safety-screened packing guidance and documents everything in writing.

5

A gentle, planned arrival

She meets her therapist and prescriber, starts the routine that first evening, and her opening family session gets booked with every participating adult before you leave.

Coverage & cost

Using insurance for residential mood swings treatment

Major private plans generally cover residential treatment for the disorders driving severe mood swings through their behavioral-health benefit. Nexus Teen Academy accepts most of these major private plans. Whichever relative carries the policy, we check what her plan covers and our network status, free and privately, often on the day of your first call, and set out costs clearly before anyone commits.

  1. 1You send your plan detailsTwo required fields. Member ID optional. Takes about a minute.
  2. 2We verify with your insurer directlyIn-network or out-of-network, free and confidential, usually the same day.

Aftercare planning for Sun City West families.

Weeks before discharge, planning starts with every caregiving adult invited. A licensed admissions counselor can answer it on the phone right now, no script, no pressure, and no obligation to enroll.

Centers & getting there

Yes. Relatives who search near me from Sun City West usually land on the Cave Creek home we run for girls. Count on 45 to 55 minutes via the 303 and the 101; that is a real commitment, not next door, but manageable when relatives take turns. Call (480) 485-3424 any hour.

Yes. A parent in another city or state can log in to each week's family session over secure video while grandparents attend in person, so everyone is part of one conversation and hears the same plan.

Many families set a rotation: one grandparent attends a session in Cave Creek, another joins by video, and attendance at Saturday's parent group rotates. Our staff help schedule it so each adult stays connected without making the long drive every time.

Calm and predictable. The residents are all girls in their early and middle teens, so talk about periods, moods, self-harm or online pressure comes more easily, and quiet evenings protect the sleep the team is tracking.

Care & cost

The home plan is written down and shared with each consenting adult: her early warning signs, the agreed response to each, bedtime and phone limits, and medication details. Family sessions review it so no one improvises a different approach.

It can be. A federal advisory from the Surgeon General's office (2023) flagged that adolescents whose social media use tops three hours daily face twice the odds of symptoms of depression and anxiety. At the house phones and tablets are collected at nine, and the home plan gives every household one shared phone rule.

Whichever parent or guardian legally holds decision-making authority. The prescriber explains every option, adjusts doses on observed response, and makes no change without that consent; other relatives can be included in the conversation with permission.

Yes. We accept most big private insurers, and coverage for a residential stay normally comes through the behavioral-health benefit when the stay is medically necessary; we verify the policy of whichever relative covers her, free, typically within a day.

Plan on an initial stay of at least 30 days, adjusted to progress. Before discharge the team books PHP or IOP if that is the right next step, lines up outpatient psychiatric and therapy care near the family's homes, and phases her back into school with Dysart or her home district.

Licensing & privacy

Three credentials: an AZDHS license, Joint Commission accreditation and a LegitScript certificate. Feel free to verify each with the issuing body.

Only the adults the legal decision-maker authorizes. Her health information is protected under HIPAA, so a grandparent, an out-of-state parent or a school contact receives updates once the right releases are signed.

Yes. Speaking with admissions is private and creates no obligation, so one relative can gather information and share it with the rest of the family before anyone decides.

Admission & daily life

Often within a few days. Admissions calls are returned within 24 hours, usually within minutes. A counselor checks your insurance benefits and licensed clinicians complete an assessment, and if everything moves smoothly your teen can move in shortly after. A coordinator walks you through travel, paperwork, and the first day.

Yes. Nexus Teen Academy offers tours of the home by appointment, so you can see where your teen would live and ask the team your questions in person before you decide anything. Call admissions to schedule a tour at a time that suits your family.

Yes. Family therapy happens once a week and is typically followed by about an hour of visitation, and parents are expected to take part. After orientation, teens can call home during designated hours most days, and families can also join a weekly virtual Family Empowerment group with other parents.

No. Personal phones and other devices stay at home for the length of the stay. Teens use tablets for video calls with approved contacts and computers for schoolwork, so contact with family continues through approved channels while the focus stays on treatment.

School continues during treatment. Teens attend accredited, credit-bearing classes on site, and education supervisors help with coursework and stay in touch with families. Bring a copy of any 504 plan or IEP at admission, and before discharge the team plans a staged return to your teen's home school.

Pack about two weeks of clothes without laces or drawstrings, alcohol-free toiletries, and any prescribed medication in its original packaging with a current medication list. Bring a guardian ID, a copy of any 504 plan or IEP, and school books. Personal phones and school-issued tablets stay at home.

The evidence

Research on mood swings in teen girls

Serious swings in adolescent girls usually rest on common conditions, and relatives who see her at different moments can each miss part of the pattern. Each figure names its source.

Aerial view of a Nexus Teen Academy residential center in Arizona

53%

of U.S. high schoolers who are girls described their sadness or hopelessness as persistent in 2023, often voiced at home as irritability (CDC YRBS, 2023).

3.3%

of girls 13 through 18 nationwide have had bipolar disorder at one time, per the adolescent survey (NIMH, NCS-A).

1.6%

of women and girls have PMDD by confirmed criteria, a pattern that only a daily record across cycles reveals (J Affect Disord, 2024).

1 in 4

In Arizona, teens who required mental-health support called access very hard or simply out of reach (AZDHS, 2026).

A treatable condition usually sits under severe swings, and the adults around her can only respond consistently once that condition is named.

With access that tight statewide, relatives near Sun City West often call early, since an outpatient psychiatry opening can take months to appear.

Across Arizona

Residential mood swings care within reach of Sun City West.

Leaving Sun City West, take the 303 and then the 101 east; the whole drive runs 45 to 55 minutes. Relatives often take turns driving to sessions, while a parent farther away joins on secure video. The admissions phone is answered day and night.

East on the 303, then the 101

Each leg of the trip takes 45 to 55 minutes. Sharing the trips among relatives keeps someone in the room most weeks while others connect remotely.

Mixed in-person and video

Each weekly family session has some adults in the room and others on secure video, so a parent living elsewhere and nearby grandparents join the same conversation.

Aftercare across the northwest Valley

Step-down care is set up when it is the right fit, along with outpatient psychiatric and therapy appointments around Sun City West or Surprise and a graduated return to classes with Dysart or her home district.
