About Nexus Teen Academy

How Nexus Teen Academy supports Goodyear families.

Nexus Teen Academy is a residential program with Arizona licensing and Joint Commission accreditation, serving teenage girls whose shifting moods have outrun what weekly appointments can manage. The house occupies several desert acres up in Cave Creek, a good hour across the metro from Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Irritability rooted in depression, highs stretching over days, a dip timed to her cycle, anxiety, trauma and sleep that has gone ragged can all present as the same storm at home, so the team pins down the source first.

Every admission starts with a psychiatric evaluation built on DSM-5 criteria; from then on, staff note her mood, how energetic she seems and how many hours she sleeps, day in and day out. The house is AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited and LegitScript certified.

The program

What our residential mood swings program includes.

Her whole stay runs on one plan, carried out in a home for girls alone: diagnosis, therapy on weekdays, prescribing if warranted, classes, family work. Each element listed below gets reviewed every week against the daily chart, and those reviews are what you hear about on calls when Goodyear is too far for a midweek drive.

Evaluation, then a plan

Screening spans depression, bipolar-pattern illness, PMDD, DMDD, trauma, substance use, ADHD and anxiety; earlier evaluations are reviewed with consent.

A chart you can ask about

Daily notes on her energy, sleep and mood, with cycle tracking when she consents, give you concrete updates even in weeks you cannot make the drive.

One therapist, every weekday

Five sessions a week with one licensed clinician; CBT sits at the core, aimed at a swing's sparks and early stages, with EMDR after stabilization when trauma is behind it.

Tools for a sudden turn

A daily drill of grounding, counted breaths and riding out distress, using the same tools you will learn to prompt at home in Goodyear.

Family therapy across the miles

Weekly family sessions, in one room at Cave Creek or connected from Goodyear by secure video, along with Saturday parent coaching on meeting a turn without adding heat.

Prescriber on site

Medicine follows whatever diagnosis the evaluation confirms, is tuned by staff observations, and changes only once you have agreed, wherever you happen to be.

School credit continues

Weekday classes keep credits accumulating under a certified teacher's instruction, so an hour away from Goodyear does not mean a semester lost.

Clockwork days

Fixed hours for waking, eating, learning and lights-out on all seven days, because an unsteady sleep pattern can stir up mood on its own.

Frequently linked

What can sit behind severe mood swings.

A severe swing usually traces back to something treatable. When the CDC polled high schoolers in 2023, a majority of girls (53%) reported being dogged by sadness or hopelessness, and in teenage girls depression frequently arrives as biting words or sudden crying rather than visible gloom.

The Cave Creek clinicians look at every plausible driver at once (trauma, PMDD, substance use, anxiety, ADHD, depression, bipolar-type illness) and treat whatever is confirmed on a single schedule, so you are not juggling separate providers from across the Valley.

Life inside

Structure and routine in residential care.

A rhythm that never shifts is itself part of the care. Consistent sleep and mealtimes steady mood unaided, and with that noise removed, her clinicians can separate swings caused by a condition from swings caused by fatigue or strain.

How healing happens

Evidence-based therapies for teen mood swings.

CBT does the central work here: pinpointing triggers, reading the faint early signals of a swing, and challenging the thinking that lets a low spiral. EMDR joins later, once she is stable, if trauma sits underneath. Since she lives on site, staff log patterns a weekly outpatient slot would miss.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.

Getting started

How admission works, from first call to first day.

Teen in a one-on-one therapy session with a Nexus Teen Academy clinician
Our promise while you decide

1

One calm call

Your first call is answered by a licensed counselor, who covers the essentials: how fast her moods change, how long they last, any link to her period, what diagnoses or medicines she already carries, and any worry about her safety tonight. You come away with a direct opinion on residential care and, if it fits, how the distance will be handled.

2

Coverage check

If you approve, our team checks with your insurer and comes back, typically the same day, with what your policy will pay toward this kind of residential treatment, network position and an honest cost estimate, so travel and treatment can be budgeted together.

3

Clinical assessment

Next, a licensed clinician reads her full history (mood patterns, earlier diagnoses, medication trials, relatives' mental health, current safety) and says which setting suits her. A two-week home diary covering sleep, moods and her cycle gives that recommendation more to go on.

4

Plan the arrival

Your coordinator plans the day you drive her up from Goodyear, gathers school records and current prescriptions, sends word on what she can and cannot bring, and gives you a single direct number for everything that follows.

5

A gentle, planned arrival

Day one brings her clinicians, a walk through the routine and an early night. Before you begin the hour-long drive home, your first family session (at the house or on screen) already has a date.

Coverage & cost

Using insurance for residential mood swings treatment

Most major private insurance generally pays for residential treatment of the conditions underneath severe mood swings through behavioral-health benefits; Nexus Teen Academy is recognized by most big commercial carriers. We check your daughter's coverage and our network standing at no cost and confidentially, typically within the business day, then project costs so treatment and travel can be planned together.

  1. 1You send your plan detailsTwo required fields. Member ID optional. Takes about a minute.
  2. 2We verify with your insurer directlyIn-network or out-of-network, free and confidential, usually the same day.

After discharge

Aftercare planning for Goodyear families.

Because Cave Creek is far from home, the Goodyear end of her care is built before discharge: west-side outpatient prescribing and therapy booked, her warning signs listed alongside your family's response to each, medication continuity mapped, sleep and phone habits agreed, and classes resumed in stages through her home district.

Mood swings treatment FAQs for Goodyear families

Goodyear parents mostly ask about distance: how visits work, how they stay involved by video, and how care continues near home.

Your question isn’t here?

A licensed admissions counselor can answer it on the phone right now, no script, no pressure, and no obligation to enroll.

Talk to a counselorAnswered 24/7 at (480) 485-3424

Centers & getting there

Yes, about an hour away. Nexus Teen Academy's Cave Creek home accepts girls from twelve through seventeen and sits 50-60 minutes from Goodyear, one of the longer west Valley drives, so visits and video sessions are planned up front. If your near me search started in Goodyear, call (480) 485-3424.

Pick one anchor day and keep it. Many Goodyear parents line up a visit right after that week's family session, so one 50-60 minute drive covers both, and switch to video when work or the 303 makes the trip impractical.

Yes. Her own therapist leads it every week; come to the house or sign in from home on a secure video link. Saturday's group for parents adds practical coaching on calming things down when she turns.

Calm helps mood treatment, and a house of teenage girls tends to stay calmer. Topics like period-linked moods, self-harm and the pull of social media also come up more freely when every peer is a girl.

Care & cost

It can. America's Surgeon General cautioned in a 2023 advisory that adolescents on social media beyond three hours a day carry twice the risk for depressive and anxious symptoms. At the house, family phone calls fall between four and six, and screens go away at nine at night to protect sleep.

Only if the diagnosis requires it. Our prescriber is on site, explains options, fine-tunes doses using daily staff observations, and waits for a parent's agreement before any change.

That is what the evaluation and daily chart are for. Bipolar-spectrum illness shows up in episodes lasting several days while sleep and energy shift. PMDD brings a premenstrual wave of irritability and low mood that recedes once her period starts, confirmed by charting symptoms through two cycles. In DMDD there are severe outbursts along with an irritable mood nearly every day, starting before age 10.

That depends on your plan, but residential care for these conditions is usually paid through the policy's behavioral-health benefit when medical necessity applies. Our verification is free and confidential, typically same-day, so you can budget the drives alongside whatever you would owe.

Thirty days is the usual floor, and progress decides the finish. Before she leaves, partial hospitalization or IOP follows if suitable, and a west Valley prescriber and therapist (outside referrals, not our staff) are booked, so someone local is ready the week she returns.

Licensing & privacy

Yes. There is class every weekday, a certified teacher in charge, and credit earned. Records move only with your consent, and going back to school, through the Liberty district or, for older girls, Agua Fria Union, happens in stages coordinated with that district.

Yes: AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited, LegitScript certified, each verifiable before your first drive north.

Under HIPAA, nobody beyond the people you authorize, for example the pediatrician she sees, an insurer or one person at school. Video sessions run on a secure platform, and conversations with admissions are kept confidential.

Admission & daily life

Often within a few days. Admissions calls are returned within 24 hours, usually within minutes. A counselor checks your insurance benefits and licensed clinicians complete an assessment, and if everything moves smoothly your teen can move in shortly after. A coordinator walks you through travel, paperwork, and the first day.

Yes. Nexus Teen Academy offers tours of the home by appointment, so you can see where your teen would live and ask the team your questions in person before you decide anything. Call admissions to schedule a tour at a time that suits your family.

Yes. Family therapy happens once a week and is typically followed by about an hour of visitation, and parents are expected to take part. After orientation, teens can call home during designated hours most days, and families can also join a weekly virtual Family Empowerment group with other parents.

No. Personal phones and other devices stay at home for the length of the stay. Teens use tablets for video calls with approved contacts and computers for schoolwork, so contact with family continues through approved channels while the focus stays on treatment.

School continues during treatment. Teens attend accredited, credit-bearing classes on site, and education supervisors help with coursework and stay in touch with families. Bring a copy of any 504 plan or IEP at admission, and before discharge the team plans a staged return to your teen's home school.

Pack about two weeks of clothes without laces or drawstrings, alcohol-free toiletries, and any prescribed medication in its original packaging with a current medication list. Bring a guardian ID, a copy of any 504 plan or IEP, and school books. Personal phones and school-issued tablets stay at home.

What the research says

Research on mood swings in teen girls

Many drivers of severe swings appear frequently in adolescent girls yet hide easily between appointments. A source accompanies each figure.

Aerial view of a Nexus Teen Academy residential center in Arizona

53%

of girls surveyed across the nation's high schools reported a stubborn, persistent sadness or hopelessness during the year, which parents may mistake for irritability (CDC YRBS, 2023).

3.3%

of girls nationally, 13- through 18-year-olds, have lived with bipolar disorder, per lifetime survey data (NIMH, NCS-A).

1.6%

is the confirmed-criteria prevalence of PMDD among women and girls (J Affect Disord, 2024).

1 in 4

adolescents across Arizona with mental-health care needs rated that care very difficult to obtain, or out of reach entirely (AZDHS, 2026).

Getting the diagnosis right decides the treatment, which is why the evaluation comes before anything else.

Arizona's access gap touches 1 in 4 young people in need of care, so Goodyear families who would otherwise wait for a west Valley psychiatrist often move faster through residential admission.

Each of these cities is a drive away from Cave Creek, some shorter than Goodyear's. We help plan the trips, and weekly family sessions work in person or over a secure connection.

Across Arizona

Residential mood swings care within reach of Goodyear.

Count on 50-60 minutes in each direction: Loop 303 north to Interstate 17, then the road east into Cave Creek. Spring-training traffic and weekday rush can push that up, so many families pick a fixed visiting day and protect it. Admissions is reachable any hour.

Allow an hour: the 303, then Interstate 17

From Goodyear, ride the 303 north to Interstate 17, then cut east to Cave Creek: 50-60 minutes each way. A fixed visit day, paired with the family session, keeps the distance manageable.

Video sessions, same therapist

If a week's drive will not work, family therapy shifts to secure video with her usual therapist, so the miles never cost you a session, and parents still have Saturday's group.

A Goodyear care team before discharge

A bridge level of care (PHP or IOP) on the team's recommendation, a west Valley prescriber and therapist booked by referral ahead of her return, and a stepwise school restart planned with Liberty schools or the Agua Fria Union high schools.
