Nexus Teen Academy: mood swings treatment for Black Canyon City families.
Nexus Teen Academy is a Joint Commission-accredited program where teenage girls whose moods have grown severe or unsafe live while the cause gets identified and treated. Black Canyon City strings along the Agua Fria River close to the Yavapai County line, specialists rarely practice nearby, and many families lean on a prescriber they seldom see face to face. Down in Cave Creek, girls 12 to 17 are watched day by day while depression, PMDD, bipolar-spectrum illness, DMDD, anxiety, trauma and lost sleep are each weighed.
The first days center on a thorough DSM-5 psychiatric evaluation; after that, staff keep a daily chart of mood, energy and sleep, so the pattern lives on paper rather than in memory. AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited, LegitScript certified.
Nexus Teen Academy provides residential treatment for teen mood swings for families from Black Canyon City, Arizona, for ages 12 to 17. Girls live in a licensed home in Cave Creek with daily therapy, accredited school on site, and weekly family therapy. Most stay 30 to 60 days, and the team works with AHCCCS and most private insurance.

Components of mood swings treatment at Nexus Teen Academy.
For a household far from specialists, every piece sits under one roof: evaluation, weekday therapy, prescribing, schoolwork and family sessions. Weekly, the team checks that plan against the daily log, so decisions rest on what staff actually witnessed, not on a rushed monthly phone check-in from two counties away.
Evaluation that starts from scratch
Screening covers mood disorders including PMDD and DMDD, plus anxiety, trauma, attention problems and substance use, with remote providers' notes read.
Charting what monthly visits miss
Mood, energy and sleep are written down daily, cycle timing too if she agrees, detail a rural family rarely gets from an occasional appointment.
A therapist every weekday
Five weekday sessions with the same named, licensed therapist, centered on CBT about what provokes her and catching a turn early, with EMDR when trauma is involved.
Daily calming skills
Breathing, grounding and distress-tolerance work daily, so a quick spike of anger or tears hits a practiced tool rather than a blowup.
Family sessions by video or in person
Weekly family sessions held on an encrypted screen whenever the interstate trip won't fit, plus Saturday sessions where parents learn to stay level through a mood turn.
Prescribing close at hand
A prescriber on site replaces long gaps between check-ins, matching any medicine to the diagnosis and adjusting it with your consent.
Classes for credit
Credit-earning weekday lessons from a certified teacher, set at a pace she can handle while her moods settle.
Predictable days
Wake time, meals, school and lights-out hold firm seven days running, since uneven sleep can fuel swings on its own.
- Specialist mood care, one I-17 drive from home
Linked conditions
Conditions that drive mood swings in girls.
Hard swings rarely come from nowhere. Among high school girls nationally, 53% told the CDC's 2023 survey that persistent sadness or hopelessness had settled over them. In girls that low frequently looks like irritability, cutting remarks or crying out of a clear sky.
Girls who make the trip down from Black Canyon City may have had only quick visits with a faraway provider. In Cave Creek one team sifts every plausible cause, mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and treats whatever holds up under scrutiny in a single plan rather than piecemeal across three towns.
When her moods outgrow local options
Primary focus
Severe mood swings in adolescent girls and what lies underneath them
Depression
Irritability and tears are its common face in girls.
Bipolar disorder
Mood episodes lasting days, plus sleep and energy shifts.
Anxiety & panic
Anxious dread that comes out as edginess.
PTSD & trauma
Old trauma able to trigger a sudden mood shift.
ADHD
Impulsivity that fuels quick, heated reactions.
Substance use
Highs and lows tied to drinking, vapes or pills.
Self-harm
Screened at intake; deep lows can bring self-harm.
Safety firstSuicidal ideation
Assessed before anything else, from the first call.
Safety first- Wherever her swings originate, be it depression, a bipolar course, PMDD or trauma, a single Cave Creek team addresses it under one coordinated plan.
The setting
Our girls-only residential home in Cave Creek.
Home is a real house planted on Cave Creek desert, the kind of open country that tends to feel familiar to a girl raised in rural northern Arizona. Only girls stay there, the clock runs on fixed hours, nights stay calm, somebody on staff remains up all night, and state regulators license it in full.

Life inside
Daily schedule at the Cave Creek residence.
Routine does clinical work of its own. Once sleep, meals and activity keep a schedule, swings born of tiredness or a disrupted week begin to ease, and the ones that linger tell the prescriber far more about the condition underneath.

How healing happens
CBT, EMDR and skills for teen mood swings.
Cognitive behavioral therapy anchors the plan, working on triggers, first warning signs and thought patterns that pull a low further down. EMDR gets layered in after she stabilizes, provided trauma sits beneath the swings. Day-to-day life on site shows the team things that a monthly visit never could.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.![]()

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.![]()

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.![]()

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.![]()

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.![]()

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.![]()

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.![]()

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 23 reviews

Getting started
Admission for Black Canyon City families, step by step.
- You set the pace, with no pressure to decide
- Clear answers to every clinical and financial question
- An honest recommendation, even if another program is the better fit
1
- Today · 24/7
- ~15 minutes
One calm call
Expect questions about how fast her moods shift and how long each lasts, whether they follow her cycle, who prescribes for her now and how often that person actually sees her, past diagnoses, and how safe she is tonight. A licensed counselor then gives you a plain answer on residential care.
- What to have ready: nothing. Just call, questions are welcome, and there is no obligation.
2
- Same day
- Free & confidential
Coverage check
With your consent we phone the insurer and return with plain figures: what the residential behavioral-health benefit pays, our standing in its network and your likely share, usually before the day ends.
- What you get: your coverage answer, usually the same day, every option mapped, including in-network and out-of-network paths.
3
- Within 24 to 48 hrs
- Licensed clinicians
Clinical assessment
A clinician walks back through her history, earlier diagnoses, every medication trial, family background and present safety, and calls her existing prescriber with your permission. A fortnight of handwritten notes about mood, sleep and cycle days makes the recommendation far more precise.
- Your input matters: what you have seen at home is a key part of the clinical assessment.
4
- Within days
- Named coordinator
Plan the arrival
A coordinator plans the I-17 trip with you, gathers transcripts and prescriptions from providers wherever they practice, sends a packing guide already checked for safety and puts each step in writing.
- No surprises: you will have the packing list, schedule, and your coordinator's direct line in writing.
5
- Welcome day
- Never out of the loop
A gentle, planned arrival
Her therapist and prescriber greet her on day one, her first evening follows the house schedule, and your first family update lands on the calendar before the drive back north.
- From here: predictable days, weekly updates, and a team your teen knows by name.

Questions Black Canyon City parents ask about mood swings care
What Black Canyon City families ask about residential mood care when the nearest specialists are a drive away.
A licensed admissions counselor can answer it on the phone right now, no script, no pressure, and no obligation to enroll.
Talk to a counselorAnswered 24/7 at (480) 485-3424Centers & getting there
Yes, there is a residential choice within an hour. Nexus Teen Academy's girls' home in Cave Creek sits a little under an hour away from Black Canyon City, straight down the interstate, often the nearest real answer for families who search near me from a small town. Call (480) 485-3424 day or night.
Expect a bit under an hour each way. Many families pick a regular weekday or weekend slot that dodges peak interstate traffic, and when weather, work or a closure interferes, that week's family session goes to video.
Yes. The weekly family session happens either in the living room at Cave Creek or on an encrypted video call, and plenty of parents from up the interstate alternate. Phone time with your daughter is open each afternoon from four until six as well.
Girls 12 to 17 are the only residents, which keeps the house calm and lets talk about periods, self-harm or online pressure come more easily. For a girl from a very small community, that privacy often matters a great deal.
Care & cost
Yes. With your permission our on-site prescriber contacts hers, reviews every medication trial, and confirms the diagnosis before changing anything. Each adjustment needs your consent, and a continuity plan goes back to her prescriber at discharge.
Moods that follow something real and fade within a few hours are typical. Ask for an evaluation if swings dwarf their cause, if irritability or low spirits hang on through most of a fortnight or more, if she runs wired on scant sleep, if swings bunch together during the days just before her period, or if she voices not wanting to be around.
Before anything else, contact 988 (call or text) or take her to an ER. Suicidal talk, a plan, going days without sleep or psychotic symptoms all call for emergency care first; residential treatment can follow once she is safe.
In most cases, yes, once medical necessity is met: major private plans generally pay for residential mental-health treatment. We review your daughter's benefits without charge and confidentially, usually that day, and explain any expected cost before you commit.
Same wake time daily, weekday school with a certified teacher, individual therapy, skills practice, meals at set hours, family phone time from four to six, devices handed over at nine and lights out half an hour later. Fridays add horses, art and music.
Licensing & privacy
Yes. Arizona's health department grants the residential license, and the program also carries accreditation from The Joint Commission plus certification from LegitScript. Each appears in public listings you can check.
Her health information falls under HIPAA and goes only to people you designate, such as her prescriber or school. Admissions conversations stay confidential, and no one in Black Canyon City hears about her stay from us.
Count on a month or longer, adjusted to how she responds. Before she leaves, the team arranges a step-down program if one fits, outpatient psychiatry and counseling as near Black Canyon City as can be found, and a phased school restart with your district.
Admission & daily life
Often within a few days. Admissions calls are returned within 24 hours, usually within minutes. A counselor checks your insurance benefits and licensed clinicians complete an assessment, and if everything moves smoothly your teen can move in shortly after. A coordinator walks you through travel, paperwork, and the first day.
Yes. Nexus Teen Academy offers tours of the home by appointment, so you can see where your teen would live and ask the team your questions in person before you decide anything. Call admissions to schedule a tour at a time that suits your family.
Yes. Family therapy happens once a week and is typically followed by about an hour of visitation, and parents are expected to take part. After orientation, teens can call home during designated hours most days, and families can also join a weekly virtual Family Empowerment group with other parents.
No. Personal phones and other devices stay at home for the length of the stay. Teens use tablets for video calls with approved contacts and computers for schoolwork, so contact with family continues through approved channels while the focus stays on treatment.
School continues during treatment. Teens attend accredited, credit-bearing classes on site, and education supervisors help with coursework and stay in touch with families. Bring a copy of any 504 plan or IEP at admission, and before discharge the team plans a staged return to your teen's home school.
Pack about two weeks of clothes without laces or drawstrings, alcohol-free toiletries, and any prescribed medication in its original packaging with a current medication list. Bring a guardian ID, a copy of any 504 plan or IEP, and school books. Personal phones and school-issued tablets stay at home.
Why it matters
Why early mood swings treatment matters
Mood conditions in teen girls are more common than many parents realize, and in a small town a pattern can go unnoticed between rare appointments. Sources appear with each figure.

53%
of American high schoolers who are girls said sadness or hopelessness stayed with them, often coming across at home as irritability (CDC YRBS, 2023).
3.3%
of the nation's girls aged 13 to 18 have experienced bipolar disorder at some stage, national survey data show (NIMH, NCS-A).
1.6%
of women and girls, once symptoms are confirmed across cycles, qualify for a premenstrual dysphoric disorder diagnosis (J Affect Disord, 2024).
1 in 4
teenagers across Arizona with a mental-health need found care very difficult or simply impossible to reach (AZDHS, 2026).
Finding the condition underneath decides what will help, which is why the stay begins with diagnosis rather than a quick fix.
When 1 in 4 Arizona teens report that care proved very hard or impossible to find, a small I-17 community like Black Canyon City tends to feel that shortage first, so a residential option within an hour matters.

One clinical team handles a wide spread of diagnoses statewide, the smallest towns included. Choose the issue your daughter faces, then see how care gets arranged from where you live.
Holding an Arizona residential license, Nexus Teen Academy treats teenagers 12 to 17 for a long roster of concerns. Mood swings lead it. Next come depression, ADHD, suicidal ideation, anxiety and bipolar disorder, then eating disorders and self-harm, with substance use plus trauma and PTSD rounding it out. Black Canyon City girls, like those from other stops along I-17, stay in Cave Creek under one roof with other girls, and families who live far off get trip-planning help and weekly family sessions on an encrypted screen.
