About Nexus Teen Academy

Nexus Teen Academy: mood swings treatment for Avondale families.

Nexus Teen Academy operates a residential program carrying Arizona licensure and Joint Commission accreditation, in which teenage girls live while the reasons behind extreme moods are found and treated. The property is acreage at Cave Creek, the far northeastern edge of the metro from Phoenix Raceway and Estrella. At home, several different problems can wear one mask: depression showing up as irritability, highs lasting days, a monthly slump before her period, worry, trauma, or months of poor sleep. Treatment is chosen once the team sorts out which.

Think of the DSM-5 psychiatric evaluation as stop zero: every stay begins there, and from her first night staff log sleep hours, energy and mood in writing. The house is AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited and LegitScript certified.

The program

Components of mood swings treatment at Nexus Teen Academy.

After admission, all of the pieces listed below hang off one written plan, all of it under a roof shared only by girls. Weekly, her clinicians hold that plan against the chart and change what is not earning its place, which means the version you approved on arrival day keeps evolving with her.

Evaluation before treatment

Every stay opens with screening for PMDD, depression, bipolar-pattern illness, trauma, substance use, DMDD, ADHD and anxiety, plus a read of prior records.

A record kept daily

Staff write a daily line on mood, energy, hours slept and, if she agrees, cycle timing, turning a fuzzy memory of bad weeks into dates you can see.

Monday-to-Friday therapy

The same licensed clinician meets her Monday to Friday, mostly in CBT, with EMDR added after she steadies if trauma is one of the engines.

Skills practiced to habit

Each day she rehearses grounding, slow exhales and ways of riding out distress, so a sudden flare finds a practiced move ready instead of an argument.

Weekly time as a family

Each week a family session happens in person, or remotely over an encrypted link; on Saturdays parents meet to practice staying calm through a turn.

Prescriptions that fit the diagnosis

Our on-site prescriber ties any medicine to what the evaluation confirmed, tunes doses to staff observations, and asks a parent before every change.

Credits keep accruing

A certified teacher's weekday lessons count toward graduation, so walking back into an Avondale classroom later is far less of a jolt.

Same hours on Saturday

Rising, meals, lessons and bedtime hold steady even on weekends, since an erratic sleep pattern can push mood around all by itself.

Common companions

Conditions that drive mood swings in girls.

Extreme moods tend to have an engine. The CDC's 2023 survey of high schoolers logged 53% of girls as persistently sad or hopeless, and at fourteen that heaviness can look like cabinet doors banging and one-word replies well before anyone would call it grief.

The Cave Creek clinicians therefore test each likely engine one by one: depression, PMDD, anxiety, a bipolar-pattern illness, ADHD, trauma, substance use. Anything confirmed goes onto the same plan, since calming the surface while the engine keeps running seldom survives the trip home to Avondale.

Her admission, mapped stage by stage

The setting

Our girls-only residential home in Cave Creek.

Home for the duration is an ordinary single-family house on a few desert acres in Cave Creek, a thirty-minute drive from the middle of Phoenix. No one but girls is admitted, the timetable for rising, eating and sleeping does not bend, overnight hours are quiet and staffed by people who stay awake, and the AZDHS license applies to every part of the house.

Predictability carries clinical weight on its own. Regular sleep and regular meals settle mood without a single prescription, and once the background is quiet the team can see which turns come from an illness and which are simply what exhaustion or stress looks like.

How healing happens

CBT, EMDR and skills for teen mood swings.

CBT gives her three jobs: name what sets a swing in motion, notice the small signals that one is gathering, and dispute the inner commentary that deepens a low. Where trauma is identified as an engine, EMDR is introduced once she is stable. Because she lives there, staff see her across the whole waking day, not one weekly hour.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.

Getting started

Admission for Avondale families, step by step.

Teen in a one-on-one therapy session with a Nexus Teen Academy clinician
Our promise while you decide

1

One calm call

Stop one: your call reaches a licensed counselor. Typical questions: How quickly do her moods turn? How many days does a low hang around? Do the swings track her cycle? What diagnoses or prescriptions does she already have? Are you worried about her safety tonight? Before you hang up, you'll hear whether residential care fits.

2

Coverage check

Stop two: benefits. Once you agree, we contact your insurance carrier and report back, usually within hours, on what a stay in residential behavioral-health treatment would draw from your plan, where we fall within its network, and the portion that would land on you.

3

Clinical assessment

Stop three: one of our licensed clinicians reviews the whole history, from earlier diagnoses and medicines tried to family patterns and present risk, and recommends residential care or a different setting, whichever the evidence favors. Two weeks of home notes on how she slept, how she felt and when her period came give that judgment far more to work with.

4

Plan the arrival

Stop four: one coordinator owns the details, from the drive out of Avondale and transfer of school files to her current medicines and a checked packing inventory, then sends it all to you in writing with a direct line.

5

A gentle, planned arrival

Stop five: arrival. The two clinicians central to her care, therapist and prescriber, welcome her; she lives on the house schedule from that evening forward; and a first update call is scheduled before your car rejoins the 101.

Questions Avondale parents ask about mood swings care

Avondale parents tend to ask for the process in order. Here it is, stop by stop, along with what happens when she comes home.

Your question isn’t here?

A licensed admissions counselor can answer it on the phone right now, no script, no pressure, and no obligation to enroll.

Talk to a counselorAnswered 24/7 at (480) 485-3424

Centers & getting there

Yes, within an hour. Nexus Teen Academy cares for teen girls, twelve to seventeen, at the Cave Creek property, 45-55 minutes northeast of Avondale by interstate, near enough for regular visits. Southwest Valley parents who searched for mood swings support near me can phone (480) 485-3424 at any hour.

Start east on I-10, merge north onto Loop 101, and stay with it toward Cave Creek; plan on 45-55 minutes. Weekday traffic around the I-10 interchanges can stretch that, so many parents book visits on weekends.

The licensed counselor you reach will ask about her moods, sleep, cycle timing, earlier treatment and safety. When you hang up you will know whether residential treatment is warranted, the next step, and whether her doctor needs to send anything. The call carries no obligation.

Many girls dig in at first. Admissions helps you script the conversation and plan arrival day. If suicide comes up in what she says, if there is a plan, if sleep has vanished for days, or if she seems to be losing touch with what is real, reach 988 by phone or text, or take her directly to the nearest ER.

Care & cost

Look at scale, duration and timing. A mood tied to a real event that is gone by evening is typical at her age. Outbursts out of all scale with the trigger, irritability or low spirits most of the time for upwards of two weeks, energetic highs on scant sleep, a pattern that piles up before her period, self-harm, or saying she no longer wants to be here all warrant an evaluation.

Same wake-up and breakfast time daily, class with the certified teacher, a therapy session, skills practice, art or music, phone time with family from four to six in the afternoon, then a slow evening. Devices get turned in at nine o'clock; the house goes dark thirty minutes later.

Commonly, yes. Major private plans tend to cover residential behavioral-health treatment when the medical necessity standard is met; insurers weigh her diagnosis, whether she is at risk, and which outpatient options were tried. Our confidential, no-cost check usually comes back before the day ends.

Possibly, though only when the evaluation finds a diagnosis that warrants it. The prescriber on site lays out the options, adjusts doses against daily staff notes, and no change happens without a parent's yes.

About 30 days is the starting estimate, longer if progress calls for it. Before discharge, any step-down bridge (PHP or IOP) is lined up, an Avondale-area prescriber and therapist are booked, and her school return happens in phases with Avondale Elementary, or with Agua Fria Union if she is in high school.

Licensing & privacy

She does. A certified teacher holds class for credit on all five weekdays, and with your consent records pass between the program and her home school, so her return to an Avondale classroom can happen gradually rather than in one leap.

Three outside bodies stand behind it: the state health department (AZDHS) through its license, The Joint Commission through accreditation, LegitScript through certification. Any of them will confirm the status if you ask.

All of her health information, under HIPAA. Records go only where you sign permission, to her pediatrician, say, or a single school counselor, and what you share on admissions calls stays private, with no strings attached.

Admission & daily life

Often within a few days. Admissions calls are returned within 24 hours, usually within minutes. A counselor checks your insurance benefits and licensed clinicians complete an assessment, and if everything moves smoothly your teen can move in shortly after. A coordinator walks you through travel, paperwork, and the first day.

Yes. Nexus Teen Academy offers tours of the home by appointment, so you can see where your teen would live and ask the team your questions in person before you decide anything. Call admissions to schedule a tour at a time that suits your family.

Yes. Family therapy happens once a week and is typically followed by about an hour of visitation, and parents are expected to take part. After orientation, teens can call home during designated hours most days, and families can also join a weekly virtual Family Empowerment group with other parents.

No. Personal phones and other devices stay at home for the length of the stay. Teens use tablets for video calls with approved contacts and computers for schoolwork, so contact with family continues through approved channels while the focus stays on treatment.

School continues during treatment. Teens attend accredited, credit-bearing classes on site, and education supervisors help with coursework and stay in touch with families. Bring a copy of any 504 plan or IEP at admission, and before discharge the team plans a staged return to your teen's home school.

Pack about two weeks of clothes without laces or drawstrings, alcohol-free toiletries, and any prescribed medication in its original packaging with a current medication list. Bring a guardian ID, a copy of any 504 plan or IEP, and school books. Personal phones and school-issued tablets stay at home.

Why timing matters

Why early mood swings treatment matters

Arizona teens who were trying to get help for their mental health called access very hard, or impossible (AZDHS, 2026).

An early evaluation pays off because the engine, not the swing, determines which treatment works.

From Avondale, budget 45-55 minutes: eastbound on I-10, north on Loop 101, then out toward Cave Creek. Parents coming from the Phoenix Raceway side or near Estrella tend to pad the clock for freeway slowdowns. Admissions takes calls on Sunday nights and holidays as well.

Eastbound I-10 to the 101 north

Out of Avondale, take I-10 toward downtown and exit onto Loop 101 northbound, then carry on to Cave Creek; the whole trip is 45-55 minutes. An afternoon is enough for a family session plus some time together.

Video on gridlock days

A jam on the 101 should not wipe out your week: the family meeting can move onto secure video instead; Saturday brings the parent group.

Back to Avondale in stages

If a middle step is advised, PHP or IOP; then a prescribing clinician and therapist in the southwest Valley through referral, and a phased classroom return coordinated with Avondale Elementary or an Agua Fria Union high school.
