How Nexus Teen Academy supports Black Canyon City families.
Nexus Teen Academy holds national accreditation as a residential program, and a single clinical team there cares for teenage girls facing ARFID, anorexia, binge eating or bulimia. Ages 12 to 17 live together in a desert house outside Cave Creek. You do not have to piece together care from scattered appointments across the Valley. She lives here, eats every meal with support, and gets daily therapy for the anxiety, perfectionism or loss that the food behaviors have been covering.
One thing to know: we are not a hospital. A very slow pulse, fainting, sudden blood pressure drops or bad lab results mean hospital care comes first, and her bed waits until her doctors release her. We are AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited and LegitScript certified.

Speak with our admissions teamThe program
What our residential eating disorder program includes.
Instead of driving to a therapist one day and a dietitian another, she gets supported meals, daily therapy, school and family work under one roof, on one plan. Every week her team looks at where she stands medically and emotionally, and that sets the pace, not the calendar.
One full assessment
Food history, labs, weight over time, mental-health background and school notes, looked at as a whole, so you are not repeating her story to five providers.
Hospital stabilization first
If her body is not yet safe, a hospital treats that first; her bed here stays open until she is released.
A therapist every weekday
A named licensed clinician sees her daily, working through fear, food rules and whatever feelings the illness has been hiding.
Meals with support
Every meal and set snack is eaten alongside staff, and the amounts rise on a set schedule as her body recovers.
Family work that fits the drive
Come to family therapy each week, or join by video, then learn meal coaching with other parents each Saturday.
Medication care on site
A psychiatric prescriber at the residence can treat anxious, depressed or obsessive symptoms, and you consent to every change.
School keeps going
A certified teacher runs a school day with credit-bearing lessons Monday to Friday, so she stays on track while she recovers.
A realistic home plan
Meal guidance and warning signs on paper, outpatient care arranged within reach of home, and a slow, planned return to class.
- Specialized care for her eating, within reach of home
Whole-girl care
Mental health conditions linked to eating disorders.
Few eating disorders show up by themselves. NIMH survey data show 3.8% of adolescent girls have had one in their lifetime, and in that same survey a second psychiatric condition, often anxiety or depression, turned up in most young people diagnosed with binge eating or with bulimia.
For a family far from specialists, that matters. Rather than arranging separate providers for the eating, the mood and the trauma, you deal with one team at Cave Creek that treats all of it together, so nothing gets lost between offices an hour apart.
How eating disorders show up in daughters
Primary focus
Binge eating disorder, bulimia, OSFED, ARFID and anorexia in adolescent girls
Depression
Low mood that grows as meals shrink.
Anxiety & perfectionism
Anxious food rules that seem to keep her safe.
Trauma & PTSD
Eating behaviors that push hard memories away.
ADHD
A restless, impulsive streak that fuels bingeing.
Substance use
Alcohol, vapes or pills taken to suppress hunger.
Dual diagnosis
Drinking or drugs knotted together with a psychiatric condition.
Self-harm
Self-harm risk screened at intake and watched closely.
Safety firstSuicidal ideation
Suicidal thoughts assessed before anything else.
Safety first- Whatever is driving her eating disorder, it is treated in one plan, by one team, in one home down the road.
The setting
The Cave Creek residence for eating disorder treatment.
Families from the Agua Fria canyon country tend to feel at ease here. The residence is an ordinary family house with open Cave Creek desert all around. Meals and snacks set the rhythm of each day and everyone sits down together to eat. Overnight, a staff member stays awake, and Arizona's health department holds the home's license.
Take a self-guided 3D walkthrough of the home
Life inside
Structure and routine in residential care.
Meals are hardest early on, and that is where staff put their energy. Each adult in the dining room answers her fear and bargaining the same steady way, which leaves the eating disorder far less room to argue.
7:30aWake, breakfast & check-in
A predictable morning routine, breakfast, and a daily mood check-in.
9:00aAccredited school
Small-group classes with credit transfer, so no one falls behind.
11:00aIndividual & group therapy
CBT and one-to-one time with a therapist your teen knows.
2:00pExperiential & movement
Art, mindfulness, and outdoor time built into each day.

How healing happens
Evidence-based therapies for teen eating disorders.
The APA's 2023 guideline tells clinicians that teenagers do well with family treatment built around the illness, while CBT-E also has evidence behind it in this age group. What residential care adds is the hardest thing to find in a small community: skilled support at every meal of every day.
Core therapies
1Family-based treatment
You learn to run her meals for a stretch, then hand control back to her as she gets well. The APA recommends this family focus for teens.
2CBT-E
Enhanced CBT that questions her strict eating rules, her body checking and her urge to grade herself by shape and weight.
3Emotion-regulation and distress-tolerance skills
Skills she rehearses daily, so the next time she feels driven to skip, binge or purge, she has somewhere safer to turn.
Supporting care, running alongside
Exposure and body-image work
Once her body is stable, the foods and moments she dreads are approached in small, supported steps.
Family therapy and parent group
Family sessions every week, face to face or on video when the I-17 drive will not fit, plus Saturday meetings for parents.
Equine, art and experiential
Horses every Friday, and painting and music on other days, so she can feel calm and capable in her own skin.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.![]()

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.![]()

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.![]()

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.![]()

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.![]()

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.![]()

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.![]()

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 23 reviews

Getting started
How admission works, from first call to first day.
Our promise while you decide
- You set the pace, with no pressure to decide
- Clear answers to every clinical and financial question
- An honest recommendation, even if another program is the better fit
1
- Today · 24/7
- ~15 minutes
One calm call
You talk with a licensed counselor about her eating lately, any weight loss or gain, bingeing or purging, dizziness or other medical red flags, earlier diagnoses and programs, and whether she is safe. By the end of the call you know if residential makes sense for her.
- What to have ready: nothing. Just call, questions are welcome, and there is no obligation.
2
- Same day
- Free & confidential
Coverage check
Once you say yes, we reach out to your insurer. You hear back what the plan pays toward a residential stay, whether we count as in-network for it, and a fair guess at your out-of-pocket cost. Eating disorders fall under the mental-health side of coverage, and we explain your plan in plain words.
- What you get: your coverage answer, usually the same day, every option mapped, including in-network and out-of-network paths.
3
- Within 24 to 48 hrs
- Licensed clinicians
Clinical assessment
A licensed clinician walks through her eating patterns, her weight over time, mental-health history, any earlier treatment and her safety, then suggests the level of care she needs. Her doctor's latest vitals and bloodwork show if hospital care comes first.
- Your input matters: what you have seen at home is a key part of the clinical assessment.
4
- Within days
- Named coordinator
Plan the arrival
A single coordinator sorts out doctor clearance, transcripts, medications and what to pack, then helps you time the I-17 drive so arrival day is calm.
- No surprises: you will have the packing list, schedule, and your coordinator's direct line in writing.
5
- Welcome day
- Never out of the loop
A gentle, planned arrival
She is introduced to her care team and shares a supported meal with the house, and you leave for the drive north with a family session already scheduled.
- From here: predictable days, weekly updates, and a team your teen knows by name.
Coverage & cost
Using insurance for residential eating disorder treatment
Big private insurers generally place residential eating disorder treatment inside their behavioral-health coverage, and Nexus Teen Academy accepts most commercial carriers. We look into your daughter's benefits whether or not we are in her network, at no charge and privately, generally before the day is out, then tell you in simple language what you would pay before you agree to anything.

Eating disorder treatment FAQs for Black Canyon City families

Yes. If a near me search from Black Canyon City turns up nothing close, the Nexus Teen Academy girls' home in Cave Creek is roughly 45 to 55 minutes south on I-17, for girls ages 12 to 17. Call (480) 485-3424, day or night.
Count on 45 to 55 minutes, nearly all of it southbound on I-17. Many families build a weekly visit around a single afternoon.
Yes. Family therapy happens weekly, and you can join in person or from home on secure video; the parents' Saturday meeting is open to you too. Many families come down when they can and log on the other weeks.
Yes. The Cave Creek house takes only girls, ages 12 to 17. That lets her speak openly about her body, her cycle, friendships, online comparison and any past trauma, over meals and in group.
Care & cost
ARFID, bulimia nervosa, OSFED, binge eating disorder, and anorexia nervosa whether typical or atypical. Anxiety, depression, trauma or OCD symptoms riding along with them are treated too.
Then hospital care comes first. A pulse that is too slow, fainting, electrolyte trouble or weight falling fast all call for hospital care. We stay in touch with that team and bring her to Cave Creek as soon as she is released.
Staff sit with her through every meal and snack of the day, and portions grow as she heals. After meals, staff stay close to help her through the urges that often follow.
In many cases, yes. Private insurers usually treat a residential eating disorder stay as mental-health care once it is medically necessary. Checking your benefits is free and private, and results usually come back within the day.
Most stays last 30 days or more, with the exact length set by clinical progress. Tell us your work schedule and we will try to set family sessions at times that suit the I-17 drive, pair in-person visits with those sessions, and use secure video on other weeks.
Licensing & privacy
Check the credentials yourself: an AZDHS behavioral-health residential license, accreditation from The Joint Commission and certification by LegitScript. We are glad to point you to each one.
Not from us. HIPAA covers everything in her file, and nothing goes out unless you approve it, even to her doctor or school. Calling admissions is private and does not obligate you.
You hear from her primary therapist regularly by phone or video, and you have family therapy every week plus the parents' Saturday group, so you stay informed even on weeks you cannot drive down.
Know the facts
Research on eating disorder in teen girls
According to CDC youth survey data from 2023, most high school girls in the country felt a persistent sadness or hopelessness. Eating disorders often grow in that soil, and each number below lists its source.

3.8%
Girls 13 to 18 carry a lifetime eating disorder rate of 3.8%, well above the 2.7% figure for American adolescents overall (NIMH, NCS-A).
3.0%
Start at 2.4% for young teens of 13 to 14, end at 3.0% for older teens of 17 to 18: the lifetime rate grows through high school (NIMH, NCS-A).
49%
Twelve months on, family-based treatment had 49% of adolescents with anorexia in full remission; individual therapy managed 23% (Lock et al., 2010).
1 in 4
Statewide, 1 in 4 young Arizonans who sought mental-health care said it was very difficult to find, or they never found it (AZDHS, 2026).
Eating disorders grow more common through the teen years and affect girls most, so early warning signs deserve a proper assessment, even when the nearest specialist is a drive away.
When 1 in 4 young Arizonans have real trouble getting mental-health care, a family in Black Canyon City has good reason to call early rather than sit on a distant outpatient waitlist.
