Mood swings treatment for teen girls near Litchfield Park, AZ.

Litchfield Park is the kind of place where a daughter's absence from class gets noticed, and that worry alone keeps some parents from calling. Nexus Teen Academy takes in girls ages 12 to 17 whose moods lurch hard and often. She would sleep under a licensed roof in Cave Creek with only girls down the hall, forty-five minutes to an hour from your street, and word of her care goes only where you send it.

About Nexus Teen Academy

About Nexus Teen Academy's mood swings program for girls.

Our residential program is state-licensed and Joint Commission-accredited, built for adolescent girls whose moods now dictate the day. Home base is a house on open acreage at Cave Creek, far across the Valley from the Wigwam and the shady lanes of Litchfield Park. Seen from the kitchen table, an irritable low, a days-long high, a monthly dip before her period, and anger rooted in fear or old hurts look much the same. Telling them apart comes first.

Nothing is decided until a psychiatric evaluation against DSM-5 criteria has weighed each possible driver, and from night one her mood, her energy level and how long she slept go into a daily chart. The house is AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited and LegitScript certified.

The program

Inside our mood swings treatment program for teen girls.

Diagnosis, weekday therapy, any medication she truly needs, school and family sessions run from a single plan in one house. Her team checks every element below once a week against what the chart shows, and progress reports go only to the adults you have named. Nothing reaches her school, coach or friends unless you decide it should.

Evaluation before any plan

Screening covers PMDD, depression, ADHD, substance use, bipolar-type illness, DMDD, trauma and anxiety; earlier records are read only if you release them.

A daily mood chart

Every day staff note how her mood and energy ran, how she slept, and, with her consent, the timing of her cycle, so the prescriber reads a pattern, not a memory.

Weekday sessions, one therapist

One licensed therapist, Monday to Friday: CBT on what sets off a swing, plus EMDR later on if trauma shows up in the picture.

Calming skills, practiced daily

Grounding, slow paced breaths and drills for tolerating distress, every day, so sudden anger has a route besides a shouting match.

Family work and parent coaching

Family sessions weekly, either beside her at Cave Creek or across secure video from wherever you are, plus Saturday coaching on answering a mood shift calmly.

Prescribing tied to diagnosis

Medicine is on the table only for a confirmed diagnosis, tuned to what staff actually observe, and altered only after a parent agrees.

School keeps moving

Each weekday brings lessons for credit from a certified teacher, meaning a stretch away from Litchfield Park need not cost her a semester.

One clock, seven days

Rising, meals, class and bedtime fall at fixed times seven days running, since irregular sleep by itself can unsettle mood.

Often co-occurring

Conditions we treat alongside mood swings.

Swings this strong usually have a source. In 2023 the CDC's survey of high schoolers counted 53% of girls describing sadness or hopelessness of the lingering kind. In a teenager that heaviness often wears another face: a short temper, cutting remarks, sudden tears out of all proportion.

Diagnosis and treatment both happen under that Cave Creek roof, so nobody in your family has to retell the story at clinic after clinic across the west Valley. Whatever turns up goes onto that one plan, be it PMDD, ADHD, depression, trauma, anxiety, substance use or a pattern on the bipolar spectrum.

Mood swings, privacy and your family

The setting

A licensed residential setting for teen girls.

Her bedroom is in a house that could pass for any family home: open Cave Creek land on every side, downtown Phoenix half an hour south, nobody she knows nearby. Only girls are admitted, the daily clock never shifts, evenings stay unhurried, overnight staff remain awake until morning, and AZDHS holds the home to full licensure.

Life inside

A typical day in residential mood swings treatment.

The fixed timetable is part of the clinical work. Once rising, eating, class and bedtime stop drifting, sleep settles, and her team can tell swings born of fatigue or pressure apart from those that suggest depression, PMDD or illness on the bipolar spectrum. It also hands her a calm, unremarkable week, which is half the point.

How healing happens

How we treat mood swings in teen girls.

In CBT she charts what sets her off, learns to catch a turn early, and argues back against the thinking that makes a bad mood sink further. Where trauma proves to be underneath, EMDR joins the plan after she has stabilized. Staff who see her all day notice what a fifty-minute appointment never could.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.

Getting started

The admission process, step by step.

Teen in a one-on-one therapy session with a Nexus Teen Academy clinician
Our promise while you decide

1

One calm call

That first conversation stays confidential. Whoever answers is licensed as a counselor and asks how fast a mood flips, how long the low stretches last, whether her cycle seems to set the timing, what earlier clinicians diagnosed or prescribed, and whether anything tonight worries you for her safety, then tells you straight out if a residential stay makes sense.

2

Coverage check

With your approval we ring your insurer directly and, most often that afternoon, report what the plan allows for a residential stay, how we sit with their network, and a plain estimate of the bill you would carry. The inquiry goes no further than you, us and the plan.

3

Clinical assessment

A licensed clinician then goes over her mood timeline, earlier labels and medicines, mental-health patterns among relatives, and present safety, then recommends residential care or something lighter, whichever the evidence supports. Jotting down her moods, sleep and period dates over the fortnight before review makes that judgment considerably sharper.

4

Plan the arrival

One coordinator sorts out arrival day, current prescriptions, school records and a safety-vetted inventory of belongings, and helps you decide what, if anything, her school is told about the time away.

5

A gentle, planned arrival

Arrival day means meeting the therapist and the prescriber assigned to her, then joining the household rhythm by evening. By the time you are driving back toward the Wigwam side of the Valley, your first update call has a date on the calendar.

Insurance coverage for mood swings treatment

With most major private insurance policies, residential care aimed at the conditions driving severe mood swings is billed against behavioral-health benefits, and most large commercial carriers recognize Nexus Teen Academy. We look into what your daughter's coverage pays, whatever the network status, without charge and confidentially, most days before closing time, and list every cost you could face before you decide.

Answers

Frequently asked questions about mood swings treatment

Litchfield Park parents tend to open with the same concerns: who finds out, how school is handled, and what the work itself involves.

Your question isn’t here?

A licensed admissions counselor can answer it on the phone right now, no script, no pressure, and no obligation to enroll.

Talk to a counselorAnswered 24/7 at (480) 485-3424

Centers & getting there

Yes, within an hour. Families in Litchfield Park who type mood swings care near me usually end up calling about our Cave Creek program for girls, 45-55 minutes northeast by car. Being outside town is often a relief to families who value privacy. Admissions: (480) 485-3424, day or night.

Take the 303 up to Interstate 17, then go east: roughly 45-55 minutes all told. Visit times are arranged through her therapist, and many parents fold a visit into the same afternoon as the weekly family session. Lighter Sunday traffic makes that day a favorite for families from around the Wigwam.

A household of girls 12 to 17 tends to stay calmer, and girls are often more willing to talk about moods tied to their periods, self-injury or online drama when the peers around them have lived it too. With no male residents, there is one less social dynamic for her to manage while she gets well.

Pushback is normal and no reason to delay. Our admissions staff help you explain the stay truthfully and walk you through arrival. If suicide or a plan comes up, or she has barely slept for days, phone or text 988 at once, or drive her to the closest ER, before anything else.

Care & cost

A mood that tracks a real event and passes within a few hours is ordinary adolescence. Get her evaluated if reactions dwarf their triggers, if a low or irritable stretch lasts beyond two weeks on most days, if she seems wired for days while barely sleeping, if the swings gather before each period, or if self-harm enters the picture.

Any of them, or none; the evaluation settles it. Bipolar-spectrum moods arrive as episodes of several days that alter both her sleep and her energy. PMDD shows a monthly pattern: irritability and a low mood in the run-up to her period that lift as it begins; two cycles of symptom ratings confirm it. DMDD means intense outbursts plus irritability on most days, present since before age 10.

Parents and our psychiatric prescriber decide together. A prescription is considered only for a confirmed diagnosis, adjusted using staff observations, and never started or altered without your agreement.

Typically a major private plan pays through its mental-health coverage once her records support medical necessity. Verifying benefits costs you nothing, stays private, is often finished the day you phone, and the answers come back to you alone.

Planning starts at about 30 days, and the actual length follows how she responds. Before discharge her team arranges partial hospitalization or IOP as a middle step if needed, plus outpatient prescribing and therapy closer to Litchfield Park.

Licensing & privacy

Just the people listed on a release you sign. HIPAA protects her health information, so her pediatrician, your insurer or one school contact hears what you authorize and nothing more. Neighbors, church friends and teammates hear nothing from us. Calling admissions is confidential too.

As little as you choose. Her coursework continues for credit Monday to Friday under a certified teacher, records travel only with your permission, and re-entry at Litchfield Elementary or within Agua Fria Union is staged using wording you approve.

Please do. Ask AZDHS about the license, ask The Joint Commission about accreditation, ask LegitScript about certification; each confirms status directly. Checking for yourself is a sensible step for any family weighing a program outside town.

Admission & daily life

Often within a few days. Admissions calls are returned within 24 hours, usually within minutes. A counselor checks your insurance benefits and licensed clinicians complete an assessment, and if everything moves smoothly your teen can move in shortly after. A coordinator walks you through travel, paperwork, and the first day.

Yes. Nexus Teen Academy offers tours of the home by appointment, so you can see where your teen would live and ask the team your questions in person before you decide anything. Call admissions to schedule a tour at a time that suits your family.

Yes. Family therapy happens once a week and is typically followed by about an hour of visitation, and parents are expected to take part. After orientation, teens can call home during designated hours most days, and families can also join a weekly virtual Family Empowerment group with other parents.

No. Personal phones and other devices stay at home for the length of the stay. Teens use tablets for video calls with approved contacts and computers for schoolwork, so contact with family continues through approved channels while the focus stays on treatment.

School continues during treatment. Teens attend accredited, credit-bearing classes on site, and education supervisors help with coursework and stay in touch with families. Bring a copy of any 504 plan or IEP at admission, and before discharge the team plans a staged return to your teen's home school.

Pack about two weeks of clothes without laces or drawstrings, alcohol-free toiletries, and any prescribed medication in its original packaging with a current medication list. Bring a guardian ID, a copy of any 504 plan or IEP, and school books. Personal phones and school-issued tablets stay at home.

Arizona adolescents who needed treatment for their mental health rated obtaining it very difficult, even impossible (AZDHS, 2026).

The swing is the symptom; the condition underneath determines what will actually work.

Because 1 in 4 Arizona adolescents face real obstacles getting care, Litchfield Park families often get a residential evaluation sooner than a first visit with a local psychiatrist.

Residential care vs. a teen group home

An ordinary-looking house, a full clinical team inside.

Researching group homes since her moods started running the household? Litchfield Park girls, and girls from towns statewide, live at a Cave Creek home whose residents are all girls, an AZDHS-licensed behavioral-health residence, so therapy, lessons and a predictable routine share one discreet address.

Across Arizona

From Litchfield Park to Cave Creek: travel and visits.

From Litchfield Park the trip runs 45-55 minutes: Loop 303 northbound, I-17, then a short eastward stretch to Cave Creek. Many parents pick a weekend morning, when traffic is light. Admissions staff answer the phone through the night as well, and a call obligates you to nothing.

Up the 303, under an hour

Head north on the 303, join I-17, then turn east for Cave Creek. Total time from Litchfield Park: 45-55 minutes. Far enough that her treatment stays out of local talk, near enough to visit often.

Family sessions, your way

Do the weekly family session around your calendar: in the room with her, or through secure video at home in Litchfield Park when a workday runs long. The Saturday parent group adds practical coaching.

A quiet return home

An IOP or PHP stretch if advised, outpatient prescribing and therapy nearer Litchfield Park by referral, then a gradual, private return through Litchfield Elementary (or, for high schoolers, Agua Fria Union).
