About Nexus Teen Academy

How Nexus Teen Academy supports Avondale families.

Nexus Teen Academy is a Joint Commission accredited, state-licensed residential program in which one clinical team looks after teenage girls struggling with food and eating. Our girls' home stands on open desert in Cave Creek, a drive of 45 to 55 minutes from Avondale. We know how confusing the early months can be: she says she's just eating healthy, or she isn't hungry, and you want to believe her. Often the behavior is coping with anxiety, pressure or a hard change, and we treat that alongside the food.

A fainting spell, a pulse that's far too slow, electrolyte problems or weight dropping quickly means a hospital has to steady her first; once she's cleared, admissions picks the day she comes. We are AZDHS-licensed, Joint Commission accredited and LegitScript certified.

The program

What our residential eating disorder program includes.

Once she arrives, you won't be piecing care together from separate offices. Meals, therapy, medication and school all live on one plan, in a house just for girls, and her team checks each piece below every week against how she's really doing, not a calendar.

Looking at the whole girl

Everything gets looked at side by side, her eating, weight changes, labs, emotional history and school, so the plan fits her, not only a label.

Safe to start, medically

If her vitals or labs are worrying, a hospital steadies her before she comes, and we set her start date for the day doctors clear her.

Therapy with her person, daily

The same licensed clinician sees her every weekday to work through the fears, rules and feelings the eating disorder has been covering up.

Help at every meal

Staff sit with her through three meals and her planned snacks each day, and the meal plan grows as her body heals.

You're part of the team

Family sessions weekly, plus a Saturday group with other parents, so you feel ready to handle meals before she's home again.

Medication, if it helps

If medication would help with OCD symptoms, depression or anxiety, our on-site prescriber talks it through with you and needs your okay for every change.

School doesn't stop

Her classes keep going with a certified teacher every weekday, for real credit that follows her home.

A plan for home

Written meal routines, warning signs to watch, an outpatient team near Avondale, and an easy-does-it return to school.

Often alongside

Mental health conditions linked to eating disorders.

If you sense something else is going on too, you're probably right. By age 18, about 3.8% of American girls have had an eating disorder, national survey data show, and in that survey most teens with bulimia, and most with binge eating disorder, carried at least one more psychiatric diagnosis.

So we don't split her into pieces. The same clinicians who sit with her at meals also treat the worry, the sadness or the trauma underneath, because when only the eating gets attention, old patterns tend to return once she's back in Avondale.

When a daughter's eating starts to change

The setting

The Cave Creek residence for eating disorder treatment.

She'll live in an ordinary-looking house on the desert edge of Cave Creek, some thirty minutes north of the heart of Phoenix. Her days follow a steady rhythm set by breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, everyone eats together at a shared table, a staff member stays up through the night, and AZDHS fully licenses the home.

Life inside

Structure and routine in residential care.

Meals are usually the scariest part in the beginning, and that's precisely where the most help shows up. Every adult gives the same gentle, firm answer to the fear and the food rules, so she stops having to fight the same battle three times a day.

How healing happens

Evidence-based therapies for teen eating disorders.

The APA's 2023 practice guideline points parents of adolescents to a family approach that targets the eating disorder directly, and CBT-E has research support with teenagers too. Living at the residence means those tools show up at every meal, not only in a weekly appointment.

Sending your child or teen to a residential treatment facility is a difficult and heart-wrenching decision. The team at Nexus Teen Academy was exceptional. Our daughter's therapist was a great fit for her and played a significant role in helping us grow as a family. Family therapy is a crucial part of your child's recovery, and Nexus does an excellent job of involving the family in the healing process. We are grateful for their support in guiding our daughter toward a path of recovery.

The program at Nexus was a lifesaver for my 15-year-old daughter. After a tough year in and out of different levels of care, my husband and I had truly hit a breaking point and knew a residential facility was needed, but we were adamant about finding a place that was safe, respectful, and loving for our daughter. The entire team at Nexus was caring and engaged from day one, despite my daughter NOT making that easy for the first couple of weeks. There were definitely days in the beginning where we wondered if this was even working, but the team encouraged my husband and me to stay the course, and thank goodness we did. After completing Nexus residential and PHP programs, our daughter has done a complete 180. Her mental health struggles aren't 'magically gone' - but she has learned not to let them control her and our family dynamic is leagues better than where we started. Maybe the craziest part of this whole experience was when she recently acknowledged that she was really struggling before and thanked me for sending her to the program - I almost fainted. All this to say, I can't recommend the team at Nexus enough to any family with a teen who is going through a hard time.

Our 12 year old attended Nexus in summer of 2025. I opted for this location due to the reviews from other parents regarding similarly aged children. It's a whole different ballgame when a parent is trying to figure out what is best for their tween, knowing they will have exposure to older teenagers and older problems. That sad, Nexus is such a cohesive program. Our experience has been nothing short of wonderful, given the impossible circumstanes. All staff seems to be personally invested in each child's recovery and wellbeing. Our child left Nexus in a much more healed state than when they went in. I was so nervous about taking this huge step after poor hospital experiences and previous PHP's not being as helpful as we hoped. The staff is on top of relational dynamics in the house, and there is some separation between the younger residents and older ones, while still promoting overall cohesiveness. I feel they did a tremendous job supporting our 12 year old developmentally, bringing out a sense of childhood again. They also masterfully navigated our complicated family dynamic, going above and beyond to ensure our child's needs were met, the program requirements were met, in alignment with our family's needs. In a way, our child's time away at Nexus brought them back to us in a way we hadn't seen in a long time. I am so grateful. The PHP program, as well, is top notch and operates from heart. I would recommend both Nexus RTC and their PHP program to any parent in a similar situation. I have offered to connect with any parent in a similar place, so feel free to inquire about connecting with the staff. I know how terrifying this all is, and while we're not totally out of the woods, our child is currently attending school full time again with 2 evening therapy sessions each week. I attribute this assimilation into developmentally typical structure entirely to the care and support we all received from Nexus staff, from intake to therapy to medical and everyone else involved. Thank you, nexus, for helping our child- and our family- in our healing. I am forever grateful.

When we realized we needed a place for our teen to go longer term it was one of the hardest, scariest things I have been through as a mother. Nexus really made it easier and not quite so scary. They have a really caring staff, the kids love the staff. They truly care about your child, it’s not just another kid in and out of their house. I felt like our family was important and they were focused on what my child needed to help her through this difficult time. There was a lot of ups and downs with this process and we had some really hard times and conversations but the staff was always there to help guide us. I would truly say if you are struggling and your teen needs residential Nexus is an amazing place for treatment. The house is beautiful and it is truly comfortable for the kids. I would definitely recommend Nexus.

I highly recommend Nexus Teen Academy. The structure, support, and care they provided made a significant impact on my child, and it was also maintainable post-residency. During the residency, I attended a parent group led by the therapists who worked with the kids; where we learned critical skills and distinctions which helped with life afterward. It was also great to be in contact with other parents during this time, and the parenting group was great for this.

Four years ago at the age of 13 my daughter completely stopped participating in school and started to display symptoms of major depression anxiety and an unknown mood disorder. Her attendance at school was greatly impacted in such a way that attending once or twice a week became standard until the age of 16.Alcohol addiction and juvenile legal troubles followed and became common issues up until the moment my daughter entered into Nexus Teen Academy. To be completely honest as a completely broken single parent, after trying many attempts at therapy/medications I had lost hope and had given up on expecting anything could fix the crisis we had been living in for the last for years. Nexus Academy changed my perspective, my daughter completed 33 days and for the first time in years I saw the spark and light come back to her eyes and soul. She left Nexus displaying insight and a desire to get back on track with her education. With all professions , one will find flaws and opportunities for improvement .I believe Nexus understands this and showed an openess to suggestions and constructive criticism.

Nexus was a life changing experience. I went in at 17 and experienced my 18th in there, to which the staff and residents all made sure I felt special. My goals were formed around gaining a better sense of self identity, self respect, and healing myself from the inside out. All of which happened in ways I never expected. I was shown how healthy communication, empathy in your home life, and phone-free relationships, all shape you as a person. Each and every one of the staff and administrators at Nexus are solely devoted to the children’s lives and well being. If there was ever an issue, i felt confident to go to them about it and it was swiftly handled. It was one of the most difficult goodbyes I have ever experienced in my life, as I grew family-life bonds with every person there. Thank you all!!!!! I appreciate every way you showed up for me and how you supported me in my stay. I will carry this experience with me forever.

My daughter was referred here after her various visits to psychiatric hospitals.I was so scared to be apart from my child but Nexus made me feel better about my decision because of their loving and welcoming environment. I love everything about this place, they really love the kids and support parents along the way. I appreciate everyone that loved and supported my child while she was at her lowest. I recommend this place to anyone that may feel like they have tried all they can and they do not know what to do next because Nexus will help you with the next steps in your journey.

Getting started

How admission works, from first call to first day.

Our promise while you decide

1

One calm call

Call and tell us what you've been seeing. A licensed counselor will want to know about her meals, whether her weight has changed, purging or bingeing, dizziness or other red flags, any diagnoses or treatment she's had, and her safety, then tell you honestly if residential treatment is the right fit.

2

Coverage check

If you'd like, we'll phone your insurer ourselves and come back with numbers you can actually use: what residential behavioral-health care is covered, whether we're in network, and roughly what you'd pay. Eating disorder treatment is handled as part of the mental-health benefit.

3

Clinical assessment

A licensed clinician looks at her eating history, weight changes, mental-health background, earlier treatment and safety to recommend a level of care, and her pediatrician's latest vitals and bloodwork tell us whether she needs a hospital first.

4

Plan the arrival

One coordinator handles the details for you: medical clearance, school paperwork, prescriptions, the drive up and what to pack, so move-in day feels calm.

5

A gentle, planned arrival

She meets the people who'll be looking after her and has her first meal with them, and we set a time for your first update as a family before you drive home to Avondale.

Coverage & cost

Using insurance for residential eating disorder treatment

Residential eating disorder care is listed among behavioral-health benefits by most major private health plans, and Nexus Teen Academy takes most major commercial insurance. We'll look into your daughter's own benefits, including whether we're in network, free of charge and confidentially, usually within a day, and explain what you'd owe in everyday language before you agree to anything.

  1. 1You send your plan detailsTwo required fields. Member ID optional. Takes about a minute.
  2. 2We verify with your insurer directlyIn-network or out-of-network, free and confidential, usually the same day.
  3. 3You get the number in plain EnglishYour exact out-of-pocket cost, explained before you commit to anything.

Out-of-network or unsure about your plan? Call anyway, cost should never be the reason a teen doesn't get help.

Verify your insurance in 2 minutes

See what your plan pays toward your daughter's residential eating disorder care. It's free and there's no obligation.

After discharge

Aftercare planning for Avondale families.

We start talking about discharge weeks early, and you're part of every conversation: PHP or IOP if it's a fit, referrals near Avondale for a therapist, a pediatrician and a dietitian, a written list of meal routines and first warning signs, and a slow return to class planned with her district (Avondale Elementary for younger grades, Agua Fria Union for high school).

Eating disorder treatment FAQs for Avondale families

The questions Avondale parents bring us most often, from the first worrying signs to the drive up to Cave Creek.

Talk to a counselorAnswered 24/7 at (480) 485-3424

Centers & getting there

Yes. If you've been searching for help near me from Avondale, the Nexus Teen Academy home for teen girls sits in Cave Creek, a 45 to 55 minute drive via I-10 east and Loop 101 north. Call (480) 485-3424 at any hour.

The drive usually takes between 45 and 55 minutes, east on I-10 and north on Loop 101. In-person family therapy is realistic, and visits are scheduled around her treatment week.

Girls ages 12 to 17 share the Cave Creek residence. Talking about bodies, periods, social media comparison or past hurts is hard enough already, and in a house full of girls she can put it into words, over dinner and in group.

Pick a calm, private moment. Describe what you've seen, like skipped meals or time in the bathroom after eating, and say you're worried because you love her. Try not to argue about food, weight or looks, and don't expect her to agree right away. Our counselors can coach you before you talk.

Care & cost

Restriction, cutting out whole food groups, eating in secret, disappearing after meals, sudden intense exercise, dizziness, or a shrinking list of accepted foods with no interest in weight, which can point to ARFID. Only a clinician can diagnose, but any of these deserves a professional look.

Anorexia nervosa and its atypical form, bulimia nervosa, ARFID, binge eating disorder and OSFED. We also treat what tends to ride along, like anxiety, depression, trauma or self-harm.

Then a hospital comes first. We aren't a hospital, so a heart rate that's dangerously low, blood pressure dips, abnormal labs or quick weight loss get handled there, and we welcome her the day she's cleared.

For most major private plans, yes, when it's medically necessary, because insurers file eating disorder care under mental health. We'll check your specific plan for free, keep it confidential, usually have an answer within a day, and explain any costs before you decide.

Plans usually begin around 30 days or longer and flex with how she's doing clinically. Ahead of discharge, we help line up a PHP or IOP when that makes sense, outpatient support near Avondale, and her way back into school.

Licensing & privacy

Yes. The state health department (AZDHS) licenses it, it's Joint Commission accredited, and it's LegitScript certified. All three are public records you can check yourself.

Not from us without your okay. HIPAA means her information goes only to the people you approve, maybe her pediatrician or someone at school, and your call to admissions stays confidential.

Very. There's weekly family therapy, face to face with us or by a secure video call from home, the Saturday parent group, check-ins from her therapist and coaching on meals, so you feel ready when she's back home.

Why early matters

Research on eating disorder in teen girls

Over half of America's high school girls reported ongoing sadness or hopelessness in the 2023 CDC survey. Eating disorders often take root in that same soil, sometimes before anyone sees it.

Aerial view of a Nexus Teen Academy residential center in Arizona

3.8%

is how many American girls, ages 13 up to 18, will have had an eating disorder, above the 2.7% rate for adolescents in general (NIMH, NCS-A).

3.0%

by the time teens reach 17 or 18, up from 2.4% in the 13 and 14 age group (NIMH, NCS-A).

49%

of adolescents treated for anorexia with family-based treatment were fully in remission a year later, compared with 23% given individual therapy (Lock et al., 2010).

1 in 4

Arizona teens who needed mental-health support found getting it very difficult, or even impossible (AZDHS, 2026).

Risk rises every year of high school, and girls carry more of it. If you're noticing changes, asking for an assessment now is kinder than hoping it passes.

A quarter of Arizona teens who needed care couldn't easily get it. For Avondale parents, that's a reason to call as soon as you're worried, rather than wait on an outpatient opening.
